氣溫68度，炎熱的天氣，我們前往屈尺，然後馬不停蹄的前往山上的一邊，原住民出現，示意要我叫旁邊的中國暫時離開，我照做之後他們出來，當中的一個人首先舉手放在我的胸膛然後放在自己的胸膛表示我們是朋友，幾個人認出我來，用他們的千百種方法表示他們對我的信任，當中有一個人表示要看我口袋中的手帕，我照他的要求給他──所有的人看起來都相當怕漢人，用手指向一個漢人的村落表示出他的恐懼和輕蔑。我給他們一些天鵝絨之後離開，有一些人希望陪伴我。當時天色以晚，而且我也意識到距離新店相當遙遠，於是在幾個山地人的催促之下，我食用米飯和醃蕪菁之後有12個人準備竹製的火把之後出發，不久之後就與我的同伴會合，然後一會兒爬上陡峭的山嶺，一下子急速往下，一會兒渡過2呎深的小溪，一會兒在階地的草叢當中，一會兒在蜿蜒的山坡上，一會兒下道山谷裡面呼叫船夫，我們在半夜到達新店，在稍事休息進食稀飯之後，我們就出發往艋舺行進，晚上住宿在一間潮濕、黑暗和骯髒的洞穴（房間）然後等待黎明。然而無法睡著，因為虱紫、跳蚤等，臭蟲很多，鴉片的臭味混合者酒味，因此無法稱為愉快。

清早啟程，大約在中午的時候到達新店，在此地平靜回顧剛經過的旅行── 經過的所有山脈都是砂岩，岩石有許多不同的顏色，就眼中所見這種石頭是很好的建材，再來在許多地方有很多的石灰岩以及煤礦，在裸露之處種著茶葉，蕃薯，以及靛青類的植物（大藍）這種植物有三類，很容易就分辨出來，一種長著大葉子就像英國的馬鈴薯，另外兩種一種是一種低矮的植物，另外一種比較高就像蘇格蘭高地上的"Auld Scotia" "Bonnie Strath-navar" "Sutherland's pride" 等。──我從來沒有見過更為巨大壯觀的景象，下午我們通過茶園來到密集種植大藍的所在，這種植物的葉片和加拿大海邊所生長的有稍許類似之處，而植物的高度各不相同，由6英吋到1呎不等。提煉藍染的方式是將植物在接近地面的枝幹部分砍下來，然後將枝幹與葉片投入鍋窯當中，Steep Lime也放進去，然後讓冷水由一個鍋窯流到另外一個，結果就是美麗的靛藍，然後將濃稠的液體放入容器當中。通過大藍的種植地區以後我們來到燒炭窯，四處都有煙霧由堆聚的炭窯中向上升起，表現出山頂人工作的型態，他們的草屋位於荒地之上，四周圍繞著高大的羊齒植物以及數不盡的雜草，茅草與矮灌木叢，高大的森林也在附近──這些的草寮──升起的炊煙以及砍伐樹林的聲響，而在行走的當時雲霧和雨水強烈的讓我想起"我自己親愛故鄉的森林"──由另外一個山嶺看來是壯觀的景致。

At the close I learned that all " took joyfully the Spoiling of their goods"- Returned to Bang-kah, then out to Tamsui arriving at 10 P.M. What a day ! Stop only like thousands of others. Returned to the chapel, then came out to Bang-Kah and found it too late to come out to Tamsui, so had a meeting there and conversation with converts etc…

Sin-tiam elders said that they would not have a preacher for less money than he is getting viz. $11 per month, said a man with a family needs every cent of it so as not to be like a beggar. They protested against having a starved preacher in their midst…and will support him until the end of this year. At 8 a.m. went over to see Jamieson and found him weak and unconscious…at 10 a.m. went again with Dr. Rennie. He was still unconscious…Called again when going to the Hos. … Saw him at 4,5,6,7,8& 9 p.m. Jamieson imbecile, unable to speak.

H.B.M.Consul.,Mr. Holland came for me to go with Dr. Rennie and him Tneading fire to Mrs. Jamiesons about setting property etc. here belonging to her husband…At noon I went alone to the Hos. , then Kan-a and myself took a boat for Bang-kah, but the tide was against us, so we ran in to Chiu-nih…Five boys there recited very well, after extracting teeth in the market. I went ahead and arriving about half way to Bang-kah. I observed 2 (two) idols carried in chairs each chair had 4(four) coolies, who were greatly excited and kept the chair swinging from side to side so that the idols rocked inside to their hearts content, a heap of paper(mock-money) 4 (four)ft. was piled near by…Old women were hurrying through mud and water to take part…Gongs sounded the heap kindled chairs rushed Sin-tiam Madly through the blazing pile and tottering women dragged screaming grand children over the burning embers etc. We moved on and got to Bang-kah late enough…

Met in the morning for prayer and praise at 10 a.m. all assembles. There were representatives from here, Sin-tiam, Kelung, Tsui-tng-kha, Sek-kha, Toa-tiu-tia, Pak-tau, Pat-li-hun, Chiu-nih, Go-ko-khi, Tho-a-hng, Sin-tsng, Sa-kak-eng, Toa-kho-ham, Lun-a-teng. Ten Elders, spoke, so A Hoa, Teng-chheng and myself…There were 116 sitting, 173 standing and 84 at the doors, besides outsiders. I bap. 11(eleven) and 165 sat at the Lord's table. We closed at 1 p.m. having a meeting of 3 hours with splendid attention. Elder A. said he worshipped God 18 years and his soul has rejoiced ever since he threw idols away. Elder B. spoke about not being a shamed of the Gospel. Elder C. said he was leader in idolatrous processions etc. and a man must have a stout heart to forsake the god's of his fathers and a zealous spirit to serve the true God etc. Elder D. told how regarding all that pertains to idol worship he was chosen head of the village and how God delivered him at critical times etc. Elder E. who was teacher and confucianist referred Acts 17:28 "As certain also of your own poets have said". I believe the Shangti in the Chinese Book of poetry is the true God. If that be so, then numerous and beautiful are the references to him…E.G. Elder F. told about his father becoming a convert first, then he followed and now he has a new born son… Elder G. exhorted members to do their duty, then expect God's blessing do like he as a farmer has to do plough, hanow, manure, weed etc. Elder H. declared that himself and family would worship our Lord until death. His father was Elder and on his death bed pleaded with the whole house hold to follow him and never to idols… Elder I. Made known his former life as village Leader, sorcerer, idolater and gambler. Spent all the money he had on the idol worshipped by all gamblers-made vows-held theatricals etc. and after all lost when playing. He clearly and pointedly portrayed the fight in his mind between two principles and came out for Christ. It was Natural-Biblical and well told. Elder J. proclaimed his former skill in Tauistic rites-vegetarian notions and magical arts.-Called on a number present to bear witness to his statements-vehemently denounced such a life and earnestly pleaded with idolaters to turn from idols and devils to serve the living God… All these Elders are respectable men and have been converts for 14 years…Three of them are the sons of Elders…A Hoa wished long robed teachers, merchants etc. to respect these hard working farmers Four Earthquakes… for silks don't make men of worth. The graduate called attention to the "Great feast" My subject was Ephe. 4:4,5,6…because there were members from the regions round about what the Elders uttered need no comment from me…This was a grand assembly…

氣溫76? 氣壓30-8. 強勁的東北風。早上為禱告而聚會，上午10點大家為讚美主而聚集。從各地來的人都出現在這裡，新店、基隆、水返腳、錫口(Sek-kha)、大稻埕、北投、八里坌、洲裡、五股坑、桃仔園、新莊、三角湧、大嵙崁、崙仔頂。十名長老演講，還有阿華、Ten?g-chheng還有我自己…有116個人坐著，173人站著，84名站在門口，還有門外。我幫十一人(11)受洗，有165人領聖餐。我們在下午點結束後，還舉行一個3小時的聚會，獲得極佳的注意。長老A說，他禮拜上第18年了，他的靈魂已經獲得喜樂，從那時他就把偶像丟掉了。長老B則談到不要對福音感到害羞。長老C說，他過去是崇拜偶像行列的首領，但是一個人必須要一顆堅定的心才能放棄他祖先們的神，然後用熱誠的精神去服侍真正的上帝等等。長老D說，他如何不顧那些崇拜偶像的人，被選為村長，而上帝總在關鍵時刻傳達信念給他等等。長老E說，他以前是個儒學老師，但根據使徒行傳第17章第28節：「就如你們做詩的，有人說也是他所生的」。我相信中文詩書裡所說的上帝(Shangti)就是真神。如果真是如此，那麼豐富和美麗都是指向著祂…E.G. 長老F說起先是他的父親變成一名教友，之後他跟隨著他父親，而現在他已經是一個新生的兒子… 長老G告誡群眾他們的責任，之後期待上帝的祝福，就像他作個農夫，必須耕作、hanow、施肥、除草等等。長老H陳述他自己和他的家庭會一直禮拜上帝直到死去為止。他的父親是長老，當他在他的床上過世前，他還在向滿屋子的人辯論要跟隨他，不要拜神… 長老I，眾所皆知他過去的生活是村裡的首領、巫師、偶像崇拜者和賭徒---把所有的錢的花掉，被所有的賭徒當作偶像來崇拜-還發誓-像演戲一樣等等，玩過之後，一無所有。他清楚明白的描述他心裡兩個原則之間的戰鬥，最後出現了耶穌基督。那就是自然的-聖經的，而且被善意的告誡。長老J說，他以前熟悉道教的儀式-素食的主張和神奇的藝術----要求在場的一些人為他的陳述作見證----努力放棄這樣的生活，並熱誠的跟偶像崇拜者辯論，要他們離開偶像和魔鬼，去服侍活的上帝… 所有的長老都是令人尊敬的人，他們都已經皈依14年…其中三名是長老的兒子…阿華很想要當私塾老師(long robed teachers)、商人等等，並尊敬這些辛苦工作的農夫。四次地震… for silks don't make men of worth. I bap. six were from SaN-kak-eng, came through the night and were at Sin-tiam early in the morning. One was a convert fro ten (10) years, One for 3 and the rest for 4 years.

Baro. 30-12. In the morning at 8 a.m. we sang Hymn 33rd in the chapel then Two large umbrellas "Ban-nui-soaN" were carried before us down to boats all ready for us. One was prepared by the Converts and the other by Sin-tiam non-converts. Graduates and undergraduate, Headmen, etc. joined. A band of Music was in one Auction Sale boat with us. The large silk red umbrellas were set up in the boats. (3) Three more boats with Music followed a short distance and saw us fairly away gliding down the river. - We arrived at Toa-tiu-tiaN 1 p.m. and at Hobe about 3 p.m. Worship in eve. Baro. 30-10. At 11 a.m. went to "Union Church," and heard Rev. G. Bondfield Preach. At 6 p.m. I spoke in the same church on the Lord's work in Formosa. I touched on the Island - People-First Convert - Plans- Travelling, extracting teeth 21,000. Some churchs.. Sin-tiam, Bang-kah, etc. Oxford Col. Hos. Girls' School, 60 churches, etc. I read the Subjects taught in Col. Church was full. Many soldiers were present. I enjoyed the meeting very much.

French bombarded Kelung, 7 Churches destroyed-Sin-tiam, Lun-a-teng, Toa-liong-pong, Made My grade on site. 3 times nearly Killed by the French. a. Bombard Hobe, children under the floor. b. The whole family kan'-a' and Giam went up the river to Bang-kah. Then took chairs for Sin-tiam. At Kent'-be' a band of music met us. Then when hear Sin-tiam another and converts. At the end of the Town the Headmen met us. My chair was put down and I walked through the street which had red cloth over the doors. Keng'-be' people also put the same up over their shop doors. We got quite an ovation from the converts and non-converts. Eve, I heard many recitations~~~

I went to Sin-tiam and saw the Japanese Officer in my room and soldiers in the Chapel where was a large bed. The Officer was very nice. 100 were present of our Christians. I spoke on Deu. 33: 25. Then went to Lai-o in 1.15min. People will fix a house for worship. Several old converts were very zealous as they find it have to go to Sin-tiam every sab. In 45 min, I came as far as Keng be And then 1.15 min. to Bang-kah. At 7 p.m. we went to the new Ch. in Bang-kah at Thau-pak-chhu where we sang for an hour. House full.

溝仔與我一同前往艋舺，然後搭"黃包車"到新店，當半途中，一個可怕的暴風雨，閃電暴風雨在我們頭上閃電，風吹過我頭上，造成全身給雨淋濕，抵達新店，我們弄乾衣服到很晚然後休息。

We walked to Keng'-be' and Sin- tian Preacher and two Deacons came along found a woman whose husband died last year. He was a Christian, so also his wife ~ They belonged to Sin- tian church. I rented her house at once for a chapel. $24 a year ~ and we came on to Bang'-Kah. At 6 p. m. went to Tai-peh and spoke on Orphans.

我們走路到景美與新店，傳道與兩位執事一同前來，發現一位去年丈夫過世的婦女，她的丈夫是基督徒，所以妻子也是，他們屬於新店教會，我立刻向她租房子作為教會用，一年24塊，我們來到艋舺，在下午6點前往台北，並且講有關孤兒的事。
